Getting started
What is semi-permanent makeup?
Semi-permanent makeup (SPMU) places pigment just under the surface of the skin to enhance your brows, eyes or lips. It looks like beautifully applied makeup that’s there when you wake up. It gradually softens over time, typically lasting 1–3 years depending on the treatment and your skin.
What treatments does Skinful Aesthetics offer?
We offer microblading, powder & ombré brows (and combination brows), lip blush and semi-permanent eyeliner, from lash enhancement to smokey liner. We also offer scalp micropigmentation, so please get in touch for details.
Who carries out the treatments?
Every treatment is carried out personally by Sarah, from your consultation to your top-up. Sarah is fully qualified and insured, and works to the highest standards of hygiene.
Can I have a chat before I book?
Yes. Book a free 15-minute consultation, either in the studio or by phone or video call. Talk through the look you want, ask anything and find out which treatment suits you, with no obligation to book.
Which brow treatment is right for me?
Microblading creates fine hair-like strokes and suits normal to dry skin. Powder brows give a soft, shaded makeup look and usually last better on oily or mature skin. Combination brows blend both. Sarah will recommend the best option for your skin at your consultation.
Treatments & results
What happens at my first appointment?
Sarah talks through the look you want, checks you’re suitable and explains the whole process. She then designs your shape and colour with you, and nothing starts until you’re happy. A patch test may be recommended where needed. New customer treatments take around 90 minutes.
Does it hurt?
Most clients find it far more comfortable than they expected. Sarah works at your pace, checks in throughout and explains every step. Lips and eyeliner can feel a little more sensitive than brows.
When will I see results?
You’ll see results straight away, but colour looks darker and bolder at first. The final, softer result appears once your skin has healed, usually over 2–4 weeks. Your included top-up then perfects it.
How long does semi-permanent makeup last?
Typically 1–3 years, depending on the treatment, your skin type, lifestyle and sun exposure. Oily skin, regular exfoliation and lots of sun can make pigment fade faster.
How often will I need a top-up?
Every treatment includes a perfecting top-up at around 4 weeks. After that, most clients book a colour boost every 12–18 months (£150) to keep things looking fresh.
Safety & suitability
Is semi-permanent makeup safe?
Yes, when carried out by a trained professional in a hygienic setting. Sarah is fully qualified and insured, uses high-quality pigments and follows strict hygiene standards for every treatment.
Am I suitable?
Most people are. Some medical conditions, medications, pregnancy and breastfeeding can affect suitability, so Sarah will go through this with you before treatment. If you’re unsure, book a free consultation or give us a call.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are usually minimal and short-lived: some redness, swelling or tenderness around the treated area for a day or two. Sarah will talk you through what to expect before you start.
Can you fix or cover old semi-permanent makeup?
It depends on the colour, shape and how much the old work has faded. Book a free 15-minute consultation so Sarah can take a look and advise you honestly.
Preparation, healing & aftercare
How should I prepare for my treatment?
Avoid sunbathing and tanning, and stop using skincare with retinoids or acids on the area in the run-up to your appointment. Specific instructions for your treatment are provided when your appointment is confirmed and at your consultation.
Is there any downtime?
Very little. You can usually carry on with your day straight away. Expect some redness or swelling for a day or two, especially with lips and eyeliner. The colour will look darker at first as it heals.
How do I look after my new brows, lips or eyeliner?
You’ll leave with full written aftercare. In general: keep the area clean and dry as advised, don’t pick any flaking, and avoid swimming, saunas, heavy sweating, sunbeds and makeup on the area while it heals.
